Workshops

A) Scene Study Demystified!

When: Friday, March 19th, from 2 to 5 p.m. Note: Must register at gtgpatrons@live.ca by Feb. 20th!

Where: The Clarion Resort and Spa Founders Room

Instructor: Laurel Smith

Max: 12

Workshop Description: In this workshop, we will explore the practical mechanics of how to approach a scene:

* how to maximize the scene's emotional and psychological potential
* how to listen to your scene partner(s)
* how to build intentions and motivations
* how to eliminate self-consciousness and play the scene in the moment
* how to fully understand your character
* how to work with a director

Using plays from a variety of styles and genres, we will explore the common elements required to get the most out of any scene. The more we explore, the more fun the scene is to play!

Instructor Bio:   Laurel Smith (Director) is delighted to be adjudicating the QUONTA Festival this season.  Last summer, Laurel directed the Shaw in the City! production of Candida, for Burning Passions Theatre, after having directed the sold-out Mrs. Warren’s Profession at the 2007 Toronto Fringe.  As well, Laurel directed the premiere of her own play, the crush of beauty, at Summerworks Theatre Festival in Toronto.  In 2008, she was one of two directors chosen as part of the Shaw Festival’s Director’s Project, where she assisted on two productions, and directed a studio production of Shaw’s Overruled.  With a career as a director and adjudicator that spans 15 years, she holds an MA in Drama from the University of Toronto, a BA in Opera Performance from Wilfred Laurier, and an MBA in Arts and Media Administration from York University.  Most recently, Laurel became Artistic Director of a new summer theatre company, the Classic Theatre Festival, in Perth, Ontario, which will have its inaugural season in the summer of 2010.

B) Pilates Contrology for Performance

When: Friday, March 19th, 12 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Where: TBA

Instructor: Andrea Jackson

Max: 15 people

Materials: Please bring comfortable clothing

Workshop Description:    This workshop has two focuses.

1. Learn how, through the practice of Pilates, you can gain a strong, flexible, adaptable body, to better take on different postures and movements of any character. Learn how breath changes your emotions, so your performance is visceral and authentic. Learn to find your voice’s optimum pitch to gain full range of speaking and singing ability.

2. Because the body/mind does not differentiate between reality and imaginary, the body and mind go on a real journey at a visceral level when creating and portraying a character for stage and film. Whether this journey is dark and harsh, or upbeat and pleasant, it leaves a trail of energy, stress and tension, which accumulates in the body/mind. It affects your posture, breathing, thoughts, emotions, your health and relationships over the course of your life.  Learn how to undo and release this energy after each rehearsal and performance, to clean the slate to find your balance.

*Note: There is a great deal of information offered for crew as well, and how to properly prepare your body for the physical aspects of their job.

Instructor bio:  Andrea Jackson is the founder of AJ Pilates Contrology in North Bay, Ontario. She is certified in the Pilates Method of Contrology through Physicalmind Institute NY, Body Harmonics and is the certifying teacher training studio with Physicalmind Institute Canada for Northern Ontario. Andrea comes from a background in Acting and Performance Theatre. She graduated from Sheridan College Music Theatre in ‘93 and spent many years working as an actor, singer and dancer, from Toronto to Vancouver. Her last role was Blanche Dubois in Streetcar Named Desire.

From age 17, she struggled with depression and illness, which, in her thirties, tired of being ill; drove her to seek a holistic approach to wellness. Through her practice of Pilates Contrology, she healed not only her body but also her mind and her spirit.

This practice is a passion she wishes to share with others. Her clients range from athletes and doctors, to rehabilitation and the elderly. Developing a strong, flexible, healthy body, as well as a sharp, focused and adaptable mind, and a light, loving, compassionate spirit toward yourself and others, is beneficial for the creation and performance of characters on stage, as well as enabling one to be true to their self in every moment.

C) Voice and the Actor Workshop

When: Saturday, March 20th, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Where: There Clarion Resort and Spa

Max: 15 people

Instructor: Tracey Berti

Workshop Description:  “To speak a heightened text clearly to hundreds of people requires huge vocal extension. To express passion and charged ideas takes enormous vocal range and energy. To sustain this kind of work over the years takes a combination of consummate craft and dedication.

This sort of work – the sheer preparation it takes to perform effortlessly – is a side of acting which the public never sees. But the actor must go through the process every day.”

-          Patsy Rodenburg – The Actor Speaks

In this workshop, vocal coach, Tracey Berti, will guide you through a complete vocal warm-up for the actor concentrating on the four essentials; relaxation, breathing, resonance and muscularity. You will then be taken on a journey to discover your authentic voice through classic-based text work.

Instructor bio: Tracey Berti has spent over 30 years in show business as an actress, singer, musician, radio performer, theatre consultant and vocal coach.

A native of Great Britain, Tracey trained as an actress at the Guildford School of Acting and studied voice, speech and singing at the London School of Natural Voice. As a child, she attended the Anna Scher’s Children’s Theatre School. During the 90’s, Tracey was a soloist with the BBC Radio Orchestra on the popular weekly shows Friday Night is Music Night and Songs From the Shows. She performed in repertory theatre throughout the British Isles for many years and was in several productions in the West End of London.

Tracey is currently a faculty member in Canadore College's Theatre Arts Program, where she teaches voice, speech, singing and musical theatre. Tracey comes from a long line of theatre performers, and is passionate about all things vocal. She is particularly interested in the unique performer that resides in each individual and takes a holistic approach in encouraging the voice of authentic freedom to emerge from her students.

D) How to be a Master Mechanic – The Art of Stage Management

When: Saturday, March 20th, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: The Clarion Resort and Spa

Max: 15 participants

Instructor: Carri Johnson

Workshop Description: “A Stage Manager is a slightly eccentric master mechanic who keeps a cantankerous, highly complex machine running at top efficiency by talking to it, soothing it and lovingly fixing whatever is broken.”

Most people think that being a stage manager is all technical and requires minimal creativity.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  In this course, we will look at many of the aspects of stage management including: communication, human resources, as well as the technical considerations.
