PLEASE CONGRATULATE NORTH BAY'S VERY OWN CELEBRITY LECTURER!

Rod Carley 2009 | Communication Arts - Canadore College | Rod Carley is Coordinator for Canadore College's new Theatre Arts Program in North Bay as well as Artistic Director for REP 21, Canadore's graduate actor theatre company. Most recently he directed the Canadian premiere of Robin Soans' Talking to Terrorists. He has directed and produced over 85 productions to date, both nationally and internationally, ranging from the classics to the development of new Canadian work. He spent two seasons with the Stratford Festival as an Assistant Director and was the first recipient of the Festival's Jean Gascon Director's Award; he also received a Tyrone Guthrie Award. He was nominated for the first John Hirsch Director's Award in 1993 and, in 1997, was short-listed for the Pauline McGibbon Award for his body of work to date.

Rod has a particular passion for the works of Shakespeare, having adapted and directed fifteen of his works (Guelph University has created the "Canadian Adaptations of Shakespeare Project" website on which Rod's adaptations are featured at:www.canadianshakespeares.ca). Rod's adaptation and direction of The Othello Project earned him a 1996 DORA Award Nomination for Outstanding Direction as well as a 1998 Carbonnell Award Nomination for Outstanding Direction (Florida Shakespeare Festival, Miami).

As an instructor, Rod has been a sessional professor with Nipissing University for the past nine years, a Guest Artist with the University of Windsor (four years), George Brown Theatre School (three years), and has taught workshops for the Stratford Festival, Equity Showcase, Artsperience, Theatre Ontario, and school boards throughout the province. He has been a provincial adjudicator for the past twelve years.

What the students say:

"Rod Carley lives, breathes and dedicates his life to the work he is teaching. He doesn't need to stare at his lecture notes and read word to word. He would rather speak directly to us, using metaphors and analogies so that even I can understand. His creativity and enthusiasm soars above any other lecturer."

"They say that those who can't do, teach. If there was one person to debunk that cliché, it would be Rod Carley. Rod Carley is the most inspirational man I know. His love for theatre is palpable and contagious. His passion and skill as a director spill into his teaching. You can't help but get excited about theatre when you walk into his classroom."

Samuel French

The 2007 Samuel French Canadian Playwrights contest was won by Kristin Shepherd of the Gateway Theatre Guild.

Submissions for full length plays were invited from across Canada.  Kristin submitted $38,000 For A Friendly Face, an earlier version of which was produced by GTG in 2005 under the direction of June Keevil.

Samuel French published $38,000 in February, 2008.  Kristin looks forward to seeing it produced in other regional theatres.

$38,000 For A Friendly Face takes place in our time, in a small town where Bronwyn Bain lived out the last years of her life. Her two daughters, Jane and Annie, arrive less than enthusiastically for their mother’s Celebration of Life, not having seen their mother in years. The town’s funeral home is run by Matt, who struggles to create a decent ending for Bronwyn and her daughters, and by The Last Supper Committee, a number of women responsible for the meals for funeral events. Preparations for the Celebration of Life deteriorate on every front. It becomes apparent that Bronwyn Bain was not well loved, and that there may be no guests. In the kitchen, The Last Supper Committee members, along with Alison, a young woman who does not leave after delivering flowers, hurl toward their own meal-destroying confrontations around the subject of death. The Celebration is saved, initially, by the storytelling of Alison and The Last Supper Committee. In the end, however, the day is saved by the understanding that none of us gets it right - in life or death.

NEW LOGO

Rhona and Jennifer

The Gateway Theatre Guild celebrates 60 years of live theatre:

Jennifer Cross designs the new logo to give the GTG a new look to celebrate our 60th Anniversary!

Picture:

Rhona Kenny, GTG Public Relations Officer (Left) & Jennifer Cross, Canadore Student (Right)

On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, the Gateway Theatre Guild presented a cheque to Jennifer Cross; the winning student from Canadore College for the GTG logo contest coordinated by Professor Shirley Mondoux. Our special thanks goes to Shirley for coordinating this project and Canadore College. Also, thank you Jennifer for designing our new and improved look to the Gateway Theatre Guild to celebrate 60 years of live theatre in North Bay, ON.

Jennifer was among 18 students ina Graphic arts course called "Production Projects". Their professor Shirley Mondoux, agreed to have her class take part in our contest, to design a new logo for the GTG. After three months of designing and creative work by the students, we had our chance in March to see all the wonderful artistic entries. There were so many good designs, but ultimately, we chose Jennifer's. She gave us a design with a contemporary look; with a professional and classic font that will stand the test of time.

A message from Jennifer Cross

My name is Jennifer Cross. I'm a 2008 graduate of the Graphic Design

Program at Canadore College, and a student of Professor Shirley

Mondoux. I'm from Callander, Ontario but plan to leave the area for a

short while. I will be heading to Australia for a year to travel and

gain design experience.

The Gateway Theatre Guild logo was designed based on the concept of

the original logo. The overall look was shifted to a more dramatic

feel, with organic shapes. The new logo is meant to portray more

emotion as well as create an elegance in consideration to the Gateway

Theatre Guild's 60th anniversary.

It has been an honour to have my design chosen to represent the

Gateway Theatre Guild. I wish them all the best in their upcoming

year. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!
